And then the mysterious and impregnable Palanok Castle awaits you. The first mention of the castle appears in the 11th century. During its history, the castle changed many owners, who made their own changes to the appearance of the fortress. So, in the 16th century, a large ravine 17.5 m wide and 6.5 m deep was dug around the castle, which was filled with water, and a strong oak palisade (“palanok”) was erected along the inner edge of the ravine, thanks to which the castle is called “Palanok”. The fate of the castle is quite difficult and it has withstood sieges more than once. The most famous was the three-year siege of the Austrians, when they were opposed by a woman, Ilona Zríni, the widow of Prince Ferenc I Rákóczi, with her son. For her courage, the princess was awarded a special certificate by the Turkish sultan. She is the only woman to have the highest award of that time. Return to the city. Dinner*. Overnight stay.

The excursion will continue with a visit to the Uzhgorod Castle, which is located on the outskirts of the city center. A thousand-year-old train of history stretches behind the Uzhgorod Castle. It is known that already in the 8th century. there was a settlement of the Slavic tribe of White Croats on the local mountain. Later, at the end of the 9th – beginning of the 10th century., a wooden fortification was built on this site – this is where the residence of Prince Laborets was located. But very soon the fortress was burned by the Hungarians, who attacked the princely possessions. After some time, the Hungarians conquered the territory of the citadel and rebuilt the castle. And in the 14th century, the Hungarian king gave the fortress to the famous Italian dynasty of the Drugets, who ruled here for almost four centuries. After visiting the castle, we will walk to the foot of Zamkova Gora, where the “Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life” or the “Old Village in Uzhhorod” museum is located.
